Individual and familyhealth insurance
Cover in your own name, with the option to include your partner and children.
How private medical insurance works
Private medical insurance can help with the cost of eligible private medical treatment, subject to the terms of the policy. It is designed to add to and complement the NHS rather than replace it, and you can choose NHS treatment at any time.
Acute conditions
An acute condition is an illness or injury likely to respond quickly to treatment that returns you to the health you were in before it arose, or leads to your full recovery. Acute conditions generally do not need long-term treatment.
Chronic conditions
A chronic condition is persistent or long-lasting and may need ongoing monitoring, control or relief of symptoms. It may continue indefinitely, have no known cure, or be likely to recur.
Conditions you already have
A condition you had advice, treatment, medication or symptoms of before your cover started is called a pre-existing condition. Insurers identify these through a process called underwriting, and the method used is confirmed when the policy is issued.
This is general information about how private medical insurance works, not a description of any one policy. How each of our products treats chronic conditions, pre-existing conditions and emergency treatment differs, and the relevant product page sets out what applies.
Health insurance products for individuals
We offer three products for individuals: Freedom Elite, Freedom Essentials and Freedom Worldwide, which is arranged in two ways depending on where you live. Which one applies depends first on where you live, and then on the cover you are looking for.
Freedom Elite
Covers eligible private treatment in the UK, with core cover in every policy and a range of optional benefits.
Explore Freedom EliteFreedom Essentials
A more cost-conscious approach, paying a fixed cash benefit towards treatment you arrange and pay for yourself.
Explore Freedom EssentialsFreedom Worldwide
Cover in the UK and overseas, across five levels of cover. Where you live decides which arrangement applies.
Freedom Health Insurance cannot arrange cover for people who are resident in the EEA.
Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials are both UK private medical insurance, but they work in materially different ways. They are not different levels of the same product.
Residence is tested differently by product. Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials require you to be permanently resident in the United Kingdom. Freedom Worldwide UK requires the United Kingdom to be your principal country of residence, meaning the country where you and your dependants live for more than six months of the year. Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA is for eligible people living outside the EEA, in countries where the underwriter is permitted to provide cover.
Each product also has its own age limits, underwriting rules, benefits, limits and exclusions. Visit the relevant product page for more information, and our documents library for the policy documents, which set out the full terms and conditions.
Including your partner and children
Family health insurance is not a separate Freedom product.
All three products are available to eligible individual customers. As the policyholder, you can choose to include an eligible partner and children, subject to the rules of the product.
One policy, more than one person
You take out the policy in your own name and can include eligible family members, subject to the rules of the product.
Each person is accepted individually
Everyone included is subject to the eligibility and underwriting rules of that product, and the terms that apply to them are confirmed on the certificate of insurance.
The rules differ by product
Age limits for children and other eligibility requirements differ between our products. The relevant product page sets out the rules that apply.
Who can be included, by product
Each product page sets out who can be included, the age limits that apply to children and how each person is underwritten.
The policy documents contain the full terms.
How to arrange cover
How you arrange cover depends on the product.
Speak to an intermediary
An intermediary, such as an insurance broker, can compare products and may give you advice on which one suits you. They can request a quotation from Freedom Health Insurance on your behalf.
Arrange cover directly with us, where available
Where a policy can be arranged directly with us, we provide a non-advised service. We give you information about the cover, but we will not tell you whether it is right for you.
Your cover is confirmed
All applications are subject to underwriting acceptance. The cover you hold, and the terms that apply to it, are confirmed on your certificate of insurance.
Freedom 360, our health and wellbeing toolkit
Freedom 360 is included with every individual Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials policy. It is also available with Freedom Worldwide UK policies. It is not available with Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA. Services are delivered in the United Kingdom.
Freedom Partners
Freedom Dermatology, Freedom Physiotherapy and Freedom Diagnostics require the relevant outpatient cover on some products. Service terms and eligibility apply. Where access to a service involves an insured policy benefit, the relevant policy terms, exclusions and benefit limits also apply.
Why individuals choose us
Since 2003, we have specialised in private medical insurance, including cover for individuals and families.
Our products take different approaches to private medical insurance. Which one applies depends on where you live and the cover you are looking for.
An intermediary can compare products and may give you advice on which suits you. Where you arrange cover with us directly, we provide information rather than advice.

We provide information about our products. We do not give advice or recommend which cover is right for you.
Your questions answered
Individual health insurance is private medical insurance taken out in your own name rather than through an employer. Depending on the product, it can help with the cost of eligible private medical treatment, subject to the terms of the policy.
The cost depends on factors including age, how many people are included on the policy, the product and the cover selected, and any excess that applies. Premiums are reviewed at each renewal. The premium for a particular policy is confirmed in the quotation.
Yes. There is no separate family product. As the policyholder you can include an eligible partner and children on your own policy. Each person is accepted individually. Age limits for children and other eligibility requirements differ between our products, and the relevant product page sets out the rules that apply.
Yes. Private medical insurance is designed to add to and complement the NHS rather than replace it, and you can choose NHS treatment at any time. Some products pay a cash benefit if you receive eligible treatment through the NHS that would otherwise have been covered. What that applies to differs by product.
We offer three products for individuals: Freedom Elite and Freedom Essentials, for private treatment in the UK; and Freedom Worldwide, for international cover, arranged as Freedom Worldwide UK for people resident in the UK, or Freedom Worldwide Non-EEA for people living outside the EEA. Each product page explains what that product covers.
Each product page sets out what that product covers, who is eligible and how underwriting works. The policy documents contain the full terms, conditions and exclusions. An intermediary can also go through the details with you.
