How we design
Our approach to accessibility
We follow the Home Office guidance on designing for accessibility. It covers people with low vision, dyslexia, hearing loss, autism, anxiety, motor disabilities and those using screen readers.
You can read the guidance on the Home Office accessibility posters website. Where we need a measurable test, such as colour contrast, we use the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. WCAG is the international standard for accessible websites.
- Clear, readable textBody text is 18 pixels, in plain English, with insurance terms explained when they first appear.
- Strong colour contrastText colours are checked against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast levels.
- Colour is never the only signalAnything shown by colour also has text, a label or a shape.
- Works with a keyboardYou can reach menus, buttons and questions without a mouse.
- You stay in controlAnything that moves can be paused, and there are no time limits on our pages.
- Sentence caseWe avoid capital letters in headings and buttons, as they are harder to read.
We use WCAG 2.2 AA to check the things we can measure, such as colour contrast. This website has not been independently tested, so we do not claim that it fully meets the standard. If any part of it does not work for you, please contact us.
Accessibility settings
Adjust this website
Select the accessibility settings button in the top bar of any page. It opens a small panel with these options.
- Text sizeChoose Normal, Large or Larger. The whole page scales, like browser zoom.
- Reduce motionStops video and animation across the website.
- Higher contrastMakes text and key colours darker on light backgrounds, and lighter on dark ones.
- Underline linksUnderlines every link, so links do not rely on colour alone.
Select Reset to return everything to the standard settings.
Your device
We follow your device settings
If you have set your phone or computer to reduce motion or increase contrast, this website follows that setting.
You can also use your browser zoom, which works on every page. For step-by-step help with your own device, see My Computer My Way from AbilityNet, a UK charity. It covers things like larger text and screen readers.
Your device setting comes first
If your device is set to reduce motion, video and animation stay paused. This happens even if Reduce motion shows as off in our panel. We do this so the website never overrides a setting you chose.
Alternative formats
Documents in other formats
We can provide our documents in different formats to meet your needs. These are the formats available.
| Format | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Large print | Larger text, including forms, tables and diagrams. Helpful for people with low vision or dyslexia. |
| Easy read | Short, clear sentences with pictures to explain the information. Helpful for people with a learning disability. |
| Audio | A spoken version as an MP3 file or CD, read by a person or a digital voice. |
| Braille | A printed braille version of the document. |
If you need any of our documents in another format, including policy documents and forms, contact us or your intermediary. Tell us which document you need, the format you would like and, for a printed copy, where to send it.
We aim to get your document to you within two weeks. This is a guide, not a guarantee, and the time can change depending on the format. Easy read versions take longer to produce. We will let you know when to expect it before we start.
We can post printed copies directly to you, or send digital versions by email.
